Increasing Environmental Regulation

Sulfuric Oxide removal from coal-fired generation exhaust can increase costs up to $0.01 per kWh.  Greenhouse gas emissions regulations may add an additional $0.01-$0.03 per kWh in the near future.

Deregulation of the Utility Market

Allowing the market to determine the pricing for both distribution and generation of electricity has had the effect of increasing electricity retail prices by 50-100% in most locations.

Revenue Decoupling

Policymakers have determined that the United States must use less electricity and have implemented guaranteed revenue to distribution utilities that is independent of the amount of electricity they transmit and deliver to the customer.  While this provides an incentive to the utility to decrease electricity usage, it increases the cost of electricity to the customer by as much as 20-40%.

Public Opinion Against Nuclear Power

Germany has recently made the decree that all 17 of its nuclear plants will be taken offline in the next 10 years.  While no similar policy has been instituted in the United States, there is a significant risk that it will occur.  Nuclear generation currently provides over 20% of the electricity in the country.  What will happen if this capacity is not available to us?  Prices will rise.
